I was an NUJ rep. I can absolutely testify to a poisonous culture in parts of the corporation. Yes. There are some great managers and staff. But HR are not brave enough to deal with the appalling ones….

Sad but true. Not just the BBC, at other broadcasters too. It’s an industry problem.

It’s coming. The ability to publish lies will be curtailed on some way.Hopefully we’ll see the end of the podcast farmers with zero journalistic or editorial chops…

“An employee snapped the picture”. Whaaaaat? This is acceptable is it? Invading the privacy of a couple who’ve no doubt, paid dearly for their tickets. I’m not impressed. I hope this is not true….

Here’s one for all you media trainers, union reps and employment lawyers….Given that the BBC had a contract of continuing employment with HE, and not a freelance arrangement, he remained suspended but employed. Despite his arrest, for a matter police confirmed was not a criminal one, they subsequently arrested him and charged him for this offence. Which he has now pleaded guilty to. In the intervening period between arrest and charging he drew salary and after he was charged, resigned. He then plead guilty in court, no doubt after taking legal advice. So, asking him to repay some salary is great for a press release and is clear virtue signalling , but do the BBC have a leg to stand on? Legally? Knowing what you knew then and not now… What would you have done to manage this episode and protect your employer from legal action? https://lnkd.in/eh3QxYNN

It’s an obsession. Thanks to Apple and Spotify we have a new industry. Podcasting. Yet in the UK, our national broadcaster has its own silo for audio which it locks the talent and success out of. BBC Sounds. Set up with licence fee payers money, it promotes and commissions its own podcasts using a largely secret process, which most independent producers can’t access. It uses Sounds to try to control the market and what the public hear. By acting as a gatekeeper. It says they can’t allow UK licence fee payers access to post independent podcasts. But Apple and Spotify do. Brilliantly, I may say. BBC Sounds should be an open source for UK producers. Free and accessible. Join my campaign. If BBC Sounds is mirroring the two great providers with its own podcasts. Close it. It’s a waste of money. If not, let us in!

The Boom in the room is applause for this decision. For now. But watch out. Auntie is coming for your audience, or if a podcaster, your revenue from commercial distributors. While keeping BBC Sounds locked away for themselves. The Beeb have to be hounded out of the distribution game. So they can concentrate on allowing their creatives to compete on an even playing field.I love the Beeb. I hate it’s amateurish management . Waking up one morning and deciding to launch a “ greatest hits “ service to split commercial providers output is amateurish.

This is the BBC trying to grab the attention of the new government by pretending they are engaging with a trade body which represents the majority of independent podcast and audio producers. Audio UK does not. At its heart are production companies already benefitting from the Beeb’s largesse. This “ deal” will benefit them. Not the struggling producers making innovative programmes. BBC Sounds is still not a free distributor of all UK produced podcasts. Apple and Spotify are. The gatekeepers are simply building a bigger gate with this “deal”.Weasel words. Shameful. I shall be lobbying government with the truth. As I have always done.
